Creating an App Password in Google Workspace

Modified on Tue, 11 Mar at 11:41 AM

App passwords are used to allow less secure apps or devices that don't support modern security standards, like "Sign in with Google," to access your Google Account. Essentially, they provide a specific, single-use password for those older applications that require access to your Google Workspace account. Here's a breakdown:

  • For Less Secure Apps:
    • They bridge the gap for older applications that can't handle 2-Step Verification or other modern security protocols.
  • Enhanced Security:
    • By using an app password, you avoid giving the less secure app your main Google Workspace password, enhancing security.
  • 2-Step Verification Requirement:
    • Creating app passwords requires 2-Step Verification to be enabled on your Google Workspace account.

Creating an App Password

You must have 2-Step-Verification enabled before setting up an application password.

  1. Visit your App passwords page. You may be asked to sign in to your Google Account.
  2. You can enter the app that you are using or an app that you own.
  3. Click Create.

4. Be sure to copy the app password, as it will be shown to you once. When you are setting up the application, copy and paste the provided 16-character password.

5. In case you don't need the app password to sign into the application, they can still be revoked from the App passwords page by clicking on the trash icon.
